Carniny Amateurs 2014s suffered a five nil loss to Tullycarnet in their final game of 2024 on Saturday morning. Despite battling hard, the boys struggled on a mud bath of a pitch, with further scheduled fixtures for that pitch subsequently called off due to its condition.
Carniny were deprived of the services of several regular starters through injury and illness and suffered a further blow after losing James to illness inside the opening five minutes. Nevertheless, the boys battled superbly and were only one goal adrift at half-time.
In the second half, Carniny continued to try to play their normal style of football but found the increasingly cut-up surface to be as tough an opponent as Tullycarnet as it meant they were unable to move the ball quickly. The Reds created some good chances with the keeper making great saves from Caleb and Frankie, while Luca had an effort cleared off the line by a defender. At the other end, after some great initial saves from Zayn, or ricochets off defenders, the ball tended to rebound straight to Tullycarnet players to score from close range at crucial moments of the game.
Man of the match was Jasper for his tireless running on the boggy pitch, typified by one incident deep into the second half where, after Tullycarnet broke quickly from a Carniny corner, Jasper chased his opponent the length of the pitch before executing a perfectly-timed interception.
At the final whistle, the Carniny coaches were fulsome in their praise of the players' efforts after a result which is in no way reflective of the progress they have made since the start of the season and this group has plenty to look forward to in 2025.
Carniny: Zayn, Jake, Caleb, James, Luca, Frankie, Jasper, Sonny, Conan, Mark.
